The trumpet, the bugle or flugelhorn and the trombone are brass instruments. The tone is created by vibrating the air via the mouthpiece with your lips (lip tension/embouchure). It is an instrument with which many nuances are possible, from powerful, clear and sharp to soft, subtle and warm. You will therefore encounter the trumpet in the most diverse genres (jazz, Latin/salsa, blues, pop, soul, funk, fusion, ...) and formations (from big band to jazz trio).
Who does not know them, the jazz giants such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Clifford Brown, Freddy Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Dizzy Gillespy, Wynton Marsalis, Wallace Roney, Tom Brown, Randy Brecker, James Morrison, Roy Hardgrove, ...? And then of course there are the swinging dance orchestras and big bands of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton, Oliver Nelson, Gil Evans, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, JJ Johnson, …. and not to forget the famous and ‘really tight’ brass sections of the soul/funk formations Tower of Power and Earth, Wind and Fire.
You don’t just play the trumpet, bugle or trombone. In the beginning it is quite difficult to produce a stable pure tone as is possible with piano or guitar for example. Because the sound is created by lip tension, developing a good embouchure is very important. This requires the necessary practice and a lot of attention will be paid to it. You will learn how to use your breath properly and how to use the valves (trumpet and bugle) and slide (trombone).
Based on your own musical preferences, during the lessons, for example with the help of all kinds of backing tracks and play-along CDs, we work on your sound, timing, articulation, phrasing, dynamics and valve or slide technique. You learn to improvise and play from sheet music (reading skills).
